All three are regulated mental-health professionals in Ontario who may provide psychotherapy within their areas of competence.
Registered Psychologists are regulated by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. Most enter practice after roughly 10 or more years of university education, doctoral training, practica, a pre-doctoral internship, and post-doctoral supervised practice, followed by professional examinations; some psychologists registered under earlier pathways hold master’s degrees, and some complete additional specialized post-doctoral training. This is generally the most extensive training route listed here. Among the professions represented at Connect Cognitive Therapy, psychologists are the only clinicians authorized to communicate a formal psychological diagnosis.
Registered Psychotherapists are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. All Registered Psychotherapists at Connect Cognitive Therapy have a master’s degree. Their pathway includes recognized master’s-level psychotherapy education and training, supervised clinical experience, and a registration examination. An RP (Qualifying) is registered with the College and practises under clinical supervision while completing the requirements for full RP status.
Registered Social Workers are regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Social workers providing therapy at Connect Cognitive Therapy hold master’s degrees in social work. In Ontario, social workers who meet their College’s competence and title-use requirements may perform the controlled act of psychotherapy and use the title “psychotherapist” alongside their social-work designation.
A professional title describes a clinician’s education and regulatory pathway, but it does not necessarily indicate who will be the best fit. Relevant experience, therapeutic approach, personal style, availability, fees, and insurance eligibility may be equally important.
